Multiple Sulfur Isotope Geochemistry during the Permian-Triassic Transition

چکیده

The end-Permian mass extinction was the largest biodiversity crisis in Phanerozoic. Based on characteristic negative ?33S signals of sedimentary pyrite, previous multiple sulfur isotope studies suggested shoaling anoxic/sulfidic deep-waters onto a shelf, leading to shallow-marine extinction. However, validity this model has been controversial. I compiled previously-reported records during Permian-Triassic transition interval, and examined stratigraphic relationship between horizon, redox oscillation depositional settings, record each studied section. compilation shows that do not correspond clearly horizon or benthic anoxia/euxinia sections. also documents are substantially variable, were observed various types sediments including carbonates, carbonates/siltstones relatively deep-water facies, abyssal deep-sea cherts. Those observations allow me infer signal is robust indicator shoaling. Rather, isotopic may reflect substantial heterogeneity controlled by local factors.

Sulfur geochemistry across a terrestrial Permian^Triassic boundary section in the Karoo Basin, South Africa

Concentrations of sulfur and carbon, and isotopic compositions of sulfur were determined in sedimentary rocks from a section across the terrestrial Permian^Triassic (P^Tr) boundary in the northern Karoo Basin, South Africa. High concentrations of sulfide produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria were found in the sedimentary rocks at and just below the perceived P^Tr boundary. The ratios of organic...

Photic zone euxinia during the Permian-triassic superanoxic event.

Carbon and sulfur isotopic data, together with biomarker and iron speciation analyses of the Hovea-3 core that was drilled in the Perth Basin, Western Australia, indicate that euxinic conditions prevailed in the paleowater column during the Permian-Triassic superanoxic event. Biomarkers diagnostic for anoxygenic photosynthesis by Chlorobiaceae are particularly abundant at the boundary and into ...

Isotope Geochemistry

Isotopic analysis can be performed on minerals, rocks, soil, tissue, gases, and liquids – just about anything. In view of the broad possibilities, we will only cover a few generalities here. In most instances, the element to be analyzed must be first isolated and purified before it can undergo isotopic analysis in a mass spectrometer. Purification is necessary to avoid isobaric interferences an...
